The Big Pine Lakes are an iconic California destin

The Big Pine Lakes are an iconic California destination just 4 hours from Los Angeles, famous for their vivid blue water and dramatic mountains. You can see a total of 9 alpine lakes on this trail!

The highlight of a trip here is Second Lake, which is intensely colored and towered over by the dramatic Temple Crag. You can easily visit Second Lake as well as First Lake in a day hike. However if you’re lucky enough to snag a Big Pine Lakes camping permit, you’ll have time to visit additional alpine lakes and even the Palisade Glacier.

The trail to Hungry Packer Lake in California’s

The trail to Hungry Packer Lake in California’s Eastern Sierra is full of amazing scenery, but as I was planning this hike initially caught my attention were the whimsical names of the lakes. Just a few examples: Dingleberry, Topsy Turvy, Baboon, and Hungry Packer lakes.

There are so many lakes along this trail that even if you don’t want to do the full hike, you’ll still see plenty. The hike to Hungry Packer Lake starts at Lake Sabrina, located in the Eastern Sierra of California. This trail takes you to mesmerizing blue lakes, picturesque alpine meadows, and a unique waterfall. In autumn, the Lake Sabrina area is also a prime spot for fall colors!

Did you know that you can see vibrant fall foliage

Did you know that you can see vibrant fall foliage in California? Having moved here from New England, I was skeptical about finding true autumn colors in California. However I discovered that if you know where to look, you can find golden aspen groves that rival the maples of New England.

On the blog I’ve posted a guide to California fall colors, sharing some of the best places to experience autumn in the Eastern Sierra. All of these destinations can be visited in a weekend road trip from the Bay Area or Los Angeles. Don’t worry if you’re not into hiking; all of these sites can easily be viewed by car!

The Bishop Pass trail in California’s Eastern Si

The Bishop Pass trail in California’s Eastern Sierra has something for everyone, with routes ranging from 4.7 to 24 miles.

Why should you visit? You’ll see over 10 alpine lakes, a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the lake basin, and a mountain resembling a Hershey’s kiss. Also, fewer people choose to backpack along this trail, making camping permits less competitive than other trails in the area.

In my opinion, the Little Lakes Valley to Gem Lake

In my opinion, the Little Lakes Valley to Gem Lakes trail is one of the best hikes in California’s Eastern Sierra. Unlike most hikes in the region, this trail is only moderately inclined and has spectacular views the entire time. The Little Lakes Valley hike passes by 6 alpine lakes before ending at the Gem Lakes, a series of 4 small and intensely colored lakes.

The moderate length and difficulty of this trek caters to hikers of all levels. If you’ve been meaning to try backpacking, this would also be an ideal place to start!
